    History of the Coast Guard (India)

    Establishment: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) was officially established on 1st February 1977.

    Background: After the Indo-Pak war of 1971, India realized the need for a maritime security force to protect its long coastline.

    Role:Initially started under the Indian Navy, the ICG became an independent armed force for

  • Safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
  • Preventing smuggling and illegal fishing.
  • Conducting search and rescue at sea.
  • Modern Coast Guard: Now it uses ships, aircraft, helicopters, and high-tech surveillance to protect Indian waters.
